An Isle of Wight man “deliberately refused” a roadside alcohol test after almost crashing into a wall and being caught by police urinating into his car’s footwell.

Marcus Webb of Carlton Road, Ryde, attended the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Friday, March 1, after previously pleading guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

Munayah Hassan, prosecuting, said police noticed a car reversing in a “chaotic manner,” almost crashing into a wall, before driving off erratically in Newport on Boxing Day in 2023.

Ms Hassan told the court police followed the vehicle, which later stopped, and an officer saw Webb “urinating into the footwell” of the car.

Webb was “clearly drunk” and “smelled intoxicated,” and, after refusing to co-operate with a roadside alcohol breath test, he was arrested, said Ms Hassan.

The prosecutor said the 53-year-old failed to provide at the police station as well, and it showed a deliberate refusal.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said his client admits he had an issue with alcohol, having been tee-total for three years in the lead-up to the offence.

Mr Vincent told the court Webb’s partner of 14 years had ended the relationship, leaving him on Boxing Day.

Magistrates handed Webb an eight-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, to include alcohol treatment and rehabilitation days.

Webb was also disqualified from driving for 36 months and must also pay £239 in court fees.
