DESPITE the Isle of Wight enjoying a rain-free weekend, water levels at Sandown on the Eastern Yar remain high, following weeks of prolonged wet weather — with more forecast for early this coming week, the Environment Agency has warned.

The government agency's flood alert area covers the Eastern Yar and tributaries, from Whitwell to Bembridge.

Over the past 24 hours, virtually no rainfall has been recorded at Knighton and the Eastern Yar water levels are now slowly falling.

But flood impacts will continue in Sandown at Golf Links Road, closed by Island Roads yesterday (Saturday) due to flooding, and Morton Common Road, and ditches around Fort Holiday Park will struggle to drain while river levels are high.

At Alverstone and Langbridge, no impacts are expected after a sunny, dry weekend.

However, further rainfall is forecast to hit Hampshire and the Isle of Wight tomorrow (Monday) and Tuesday, which "may maintain the responsive nature of the Eastern Yar catchment," the EA say in their latest alert, issued today (Sunday).

"Property flooding is currently not expected. We will continue to monitor the forecast and will ensure the river remains free of any reported blockages," the alert adds.

The national Met Office or local Isle of Wight Met Service have not issued any weather warnings today.

Islanders are advised not to walk or drive through flood water.

The next flood alert will be updated by 3pm tomorrow.
