BRITISH rock icon Roger Daltrey has celebrated his 80th birthday, but what memories do you have of the singer performing at past Isle of Wight Festivals?

The rock legend, who’s been performing live since 1959, and who delivered hits with The Who, from My Generation to Pinball Wizard, performed at four Isle of Wight Festivals — in 1969, 1970, 2004 and 2016.

Roger was snapped yesterday (Friday) holding up a specially brewed beer, called Roger’s Pale Ale, in a photo shared on The Who's official Instagram (pictured above).

The post was captioned: “What better way to mark your 80th birthday than having your own beer made by your family brewery!"

But it was Londoner Roger's live performances in his heyday fronting The Who — from the mid-60s to the mid-80s — that cemented his position among the creme-de-la-creme of the world rock scene.

He first performed on the Isle of Wight at its festival in 1969, at Woodside Bay, near Ryde.

Just a year later and The Who were performing at one of live music history's greatest events — spoken in the same breath as America's Woodstock — the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival at Afton, Freshwater, in front of 600,000 fans.

Fast forward another 34 years to 2004 and Roger was still The Who's talisman, performing at Seaclose Park, Newport, in one of the best weekends the venue has ever staged.

Retired former County Press editor, Alan Marriott, said: "That year was probably the best ever. The Stereophonics with Kelly in the Dylan white suit on the Friday, The Who absolutely blowing it away on the Saturday and Bowie being the king of cool on the Sunday."

"Never forgotten that festival (2004). Went for Bowie, but The Who ended up being my fave act," said County Press reader. Jan Tavill.

Steve Packham echoed their sentiments.

He said: "What a terrific line-up that was! I am a massive Bowie fan and could always take or leave The Who, but Daltrey and co took first prize for me that weekend. They exceeded all possible expectations."

It took a further 12 years to persuade The Who to make the fourth trip to the Island.

Sam Hollinsworth, who went to the festival with her late partner in 2016, said: "My first and last festival. Had an absolute blast. Didn’t realise I knew that many The Who songs!!"

Also, Islander Barry Jones was there. He added: "2016 — great set from him (Daltrey) and Pete Townshend."

Janet Rackett is a Who fan who was lucky enough to attend both Seaclose shows.

She said: "I saw him in 2004 and 2016. Absolutely brilliant."

'Who' knows? Maybe Roger will make it a fifth Isle of Wight Festival before he hangs up the microphone he has famously twirled, incredibly spanning eight decades.
