An Isle of Wight woman, who breached her community discharge by stealing alcohol from Co-op and Sainsbury's, has been warned the next step would be prison if her offending continues.

Mazie Bailey, of Atkinson Drive, Newport, attended the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court for sentencing on Tuesday, February 27, after previously pleading guilty to two counts of theft from a shop.

The theft offences were in breach of a 12-month community discharge handed to the 21-year-old on September 15, 2023, following her conviction for criminal damage.

Liz Miller, prosecuting, said Bailey visited Co-op on Anglesey Street in Ryde at 6pm on October 17, picked up a bottle of alcohol and left without payment.

Ms Miller told the court Bailey returned to the Co-op twice that same evening, at 7.30pm and 9.45pm, to steal more bottles. In total, she stole alcohol to the value of £142.70.

On another occasion, on November 15, Bailey entered Sainsbury's on Union Street and stole two bottles of alcohol worth £5.50 each, said Ms Miller.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said: “To describe Ms Bailey as extremely vulnerable would be an understatement,” detailing his client’s “utterly chaotic childhood” and the significant past trauma she had experienced.

Magistrates said it was the third time they had seen Bailey in court in four months and warned her that the next step, should she not sort out her offending, would be prison.

Bailey was handed a 12-month community order to include 15 rehabilitation days. She must also pay £142.70 compensation to Co-op and £11 to Sainsbury's.
