STRONG winds and heavy rain are set to batter the Isle of Wight tomorrow morning (Friday).

In a weather warning issued by the Isle of Wight Met Service, the warning is active from 4am until 10am.

It follows a Met Office yellow weather warning for rain, also issued this morning.

"A spell of very wet and windy weather will develop during Friday morning," says Jamie Russell, of the Isle of Wight Met Service.

"Wind gusts of 65-70mph are possible around exposed coasts and hills, and this will be accompanied by some heavy and squally rain.

"The heaviest rain and strongest winds are only likely to last a few hours, although during that time we could potentially see rainfall totals of up to 15mm.

"And whilst that isn’t a huge rainfall total for a 24 hour period, it is a siginificant amount to fall over just a few hours.

"The timing of the worst conditions may also affect the morning rush hour traffic."
