A CARPET fitter from the Isle of Wight, caught over the limit while behind the wheel of a Nissan Navara, has been disqualified from driving.

Luke Atkins, of York Avenue, East Cowes, admitted drink driving in Newport on January 30, when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.

The 37-year-old also pleaded guilty to driving without a licence and insurance.

Police pulled Atkins over after they saw him make what they believed was "a strange manoeuvre" around a roundabout at Long Lane in Newport, said Liz Miller, prosecuting.

When officers went to speak to him, they said Atkins was under the influence of alcohol — slurring his speech and that "he didn't seem to know what was going on".

Following further checks, the car we was driving had a different registered keeper.

Atkins' drink-drive reading was 52 microgrammes. The legal limit is 35.

Defending, Henry Farley said his client's standard of driving was not in any way poor, in making the 180 degree manoeuvre.

Mr Farley told magistrates: "Apart from the driving with excess alcohol offence, the fact he does not have a licence and insurance will not endear himself to you either."

Atkins was banned from driving for 14 months and fined £120, with £85 costs and a £48 surcharge.
