AN ISLE of Wight man who was drunk and in possession of ketamine, and was found shouting and shadow boxing with himself in the street, ran from police and spat at an officer.

Jerry Russell, of Gort Road, East Cowes, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Friday, February 23.

The 28-year-old admitted being drunk and disorderly in a public place, and possession of ketamine, in East Cowes, on February 8, 2024.

He also admitted common assault against an emergency worker, in Newport, on the same date.

Lauren Stone, prosecuting, said police were called to Victoria Grove, following a report of a male shouting and hitting things in the street.

Officers found Russell shadow boxing with himself.

When they approached, he fled the scene and ran through a hedgerow, where he was eventually detained, court heard.

He presented as very intoxicated said Ms Stone.

During his arrest, a small bag of white powder, namely ketamine, was found in his possession.

The court heard Russell hit his head in the police van and was subsequently taken to A&E, for treatment.

After being discharged, Ms Stone said he became volatile and spat in a police officer’s face.

In interview, he described himself as being “ten out of ten drunk”, and accepted being under the influence of alcohol, she said.

The court heard Russell had 19 previous convictions, for 31 offences.

Barry Arnett, defending, said Russell didn’t dispute anything, but had not gone out with the intention of committing offences.

He drank too much and took ketamine, and the rest of the evening was hazy, said Mr Arnett.

The court heard Russell was extremely remorseful and wished to apologise to the officer he spat at.

Mr Arnett said Russell has ADHD and is on the autistic spectrum.

The case was adjourned to April 2, for a pre-sentence report and was granted unconditional bail.
