After more than a decade, a church has been told it can no longer home an Isle of Wight town’s foodbank due to it being in an “unsafe” location for deliveries.

Newport is now in need of a new centre for those struggling with food poverty.

The Isle of Wight Foodbank, which is supported by the The Trussell Trust, said the decision to relocate was a 'joint one'.

But the Church on the Roundabout said the news was unexpected and that it is “sad and disappointed”.

For the past 12 years, the church, on Coppins Bridge, has operated as one of the Isle of Wight Foodbank's five Island centres.

But due to "the risks involved in the delivery of food to the location", the IW Foodbank said the decision has been made to move it.

A statement said: "We would like to thank the church for its support over the last 12 years.

Church on the Roundabout said it was not the news "we were expecting".

A spokesperson said: "We really did think this was a problem that could be worked through."

Taking to Facebook, Islanders said the decision was "total madness" and called for a rethink.

Although it will remain open for the community, the church said its last day as a foodbank will be today (Friday, February 23).

After today, it means Newport is without an Isle of Wight Foodbank run centre - at least until a new venue is found.

The Isle of Wight Foodbank added: "Our team is working hard to find a replacement centre in Newport, meanwhile voucher holders can still collect their food from one of our other centres in Ryde, Cowes and The Bay."
