Vodafone has confirmed it is looking into issues in Newport on the Isle of Wight after O2 mobile phone customers complained about a lack of signal.

Islanders told the County Press they were "fed up" of not being able to make calls or get online in or around the town.

The mast used by O2 to provide coverage to customers in Newport and surrounding areas is managed by Vodafone.

O2, which is now part of VMO2 following a 2021 merger with Virgin Media, apologised for inconvenience caused.

A spokesperson said: "We are aware that some customers in the Newport area may be experiencing intermittent issues with their service.

"Our infrastructure partner, Vodafone, is aware of the issue and is actively looking at ways to boost capacity in the area."

One Islander said they had been having issues in Newport for the past 18 months but repeatedly gets told there are no problems.

Another, an O2 customer of 20 years, said they have no signal at all in Newport.

While one person said: "O2 in Newport is shocking! Cannot use data, and calls often drop or the other person cannot hear you. Really frustrating!"

A spokesperson for Vodafone confirmed it is looking into an issue with its VMO2 cell in the area.

At this stage, the company said it did not know the 'visibility of the impact' on customers.

It said it was down to VMO2 to escalate the issue further.

For Vodafone customers with issues, the firm encouraged them to sign up to Network Checker to receive status updates regarding network issues.
