The main road into Ryde was briefly closed this lunchtime (Tuesday, February 6) after Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) were called to a double-decker bus.

Motorists faced traffic disruption on Elenors Grove, between Fishbourne and Binstead, whilst Newport and Ryde fire crews attended the Southern Vectis vehicle.

Initially, firefighters had been alerted to reports of a bus fire, but upon attending, discovered there had been a ‘engine coolant leak’ on board the vehicle.

A spokesperson from HIWFRS told the County Press that fire crews were soaking up the coolant using pads from their environmental kit.

Crews managed the traffic as firefighters worked to stem the leak and clear up the spillage.

Dave Miller, Southern Vectis assistant operations manager, said: “One of our buses experienced a minor coolant leak whilst in Ryde today.

“A member of the public mistook steam for smoke and called the fire service, who attended but quickly re-opened the road when they confirmed there was no safety issue."
