Southern Vectis has said it "will not tolerate abuse" after an Isle of Wight bus driver was injured in an alleged assault.

Police were called to Newport Bus Station on the evening of Monday, January 29.

It was reported the driver on the number 5 bus was hit by a bottle.

The bus firm said he suffered injuries to his face and had to seek medical treatment.

Southern Vectis has said it wishes him a speedy recovery.

Richard Tyldsley, Southern Vectis general manager, said: "The perpetrator is known to police, who are investigating the incident. 

“We will not tolerate abuse of any kind towards our drivers or passengers."

The County Press has contacted Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary for a comment.
