A main Sandown seafront route has been closed today (Wednesday, January 31) to allow for urgent works.

Culver Parade and Yaverland Road, between the Marshcombe Shute roundabout and Fort Street, near Sandham Gardens and The Bandstand, has been closed for a distance of 2,005m.

The closure is necessary for Island Roads to carry out ‘urgent’ carriageway cleansing.

The roads will be closed in both directions for a maximum of five days or until the work has been completed.

"Reasonable facilities will be provided to allow access to adjacent premises while the road is closed," said Island Roads.

The diversion will affect Avenue Road, Morton Common, Morton Road, Devonia Gardens and Marshcombe Shute.

The Wildheart Animal Sanctuary – located off Yaverland Road – closed at 1pm today for pre-arranged staff training but will reopen at its usual hours tomorrow (Thursday).
