Two men have been charged by police investigating the theft of items belonging to footballers on the Isle of Wight.

Gavin Buggs, of Barton Road, Newport, has been charged with fraud by false representation relating to the use of a bank card on January 20, the same day Hampshire and IW Constabulary attended Shanklin Football Club.

The 43-year-old was also charged with theft from a shop and using threatening/abusive words or behaviour on December 11 at Co-op on Sandown High Street.

On that occasion, it is alleged £18.65 worth of food was stolen.

Meanwhile, Kevin Greenwood, aged 44, of West Street in Ryde, has been charged with burglary and fraud by false representation relating to an incident at All Saints Church, Ryde on December 23.

Police said a rucksack was stolen from the premises and a stolen bank card was used the same day.

He was also charged with a further count of fraud by false representation relating to the use of a bank card on January 20.

Officers said it was stolen from Shanklin Football Club the same day.

Both men have been remanded in custody to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court.

Four players reported items stolen, some of which were subsequently recovered.

A silver bangle - which contained the ashes and lock of hair of a player's father, and a ring - have not been found.
