Island Roads insists it is "actively engaged" in trying to resolve drainage issues near an Isle of Wight road, labelled an 'accident blackspot' by concerned residents.

As the County Press exclusively reported, there have been a series of crashes on Shanklin Road, between Godshill and Whiteley Bank.

Sandford neighbours, Andrew Snart and Phil Nippard, believe they are being caused by a "constant" stream of water running down Red Hill Lane and freezing in cold temperatures on Shanklin Road.

They have seen their wall ploughed into on at least three separate occasions and called on something to be done to prevent a more serious collision.

In a statement to the County Press, Island Roads said it was aware of drainage issues in the area and was talking to private landowners.

A spokesperson said: "Redhill Lane is a cutting and as such, there are higher banks on each side of the road.

"Ground water issues from these banks and naturally uses the highway network as a conduit.

"We have been in communication with adjacent landowners, to ensure that they are aware of their responsibilities when it comes to managing watercourses effectively.

"As a result, the land drainage provision on private land has been upgraded.

Island Roads said it continues to pursue the matter with 'third-parties', as it accepts further ditch clearance works are needed.

It said it is focussed on achieving a long-term solution and, in the meantime, is taking any short-term measures necessary.

"This has included the use of salt socks to mitigate the risk of freezing, regular gully cleansing and the placement of warning signs", the spokesperson added.

"Redhill Lane is not included on a treated gritting route through the winter months and therefore during periods of freezing, motorists should drive according to the conditions."
