An Isle of Wight town centre restaurant has shut its doors after just three months.

Charter Lounge, which had been based at Charter House, St Thomas' Square, Newport, has announced its sudden closure.

The restaurant opened in October 2023, with Pete Greenhalgh and Jake Rigby — the landlords of Calbourne's The Sun Inn — at the helm.

At the time, they said Charter Lounge would be "one of the sexiest places in Newport to hang out".

For three months, the restaurant served "affordable street food", from tacos to Asian cuisine, for both dine-in and takeaway.

Jake told the County Press "everyone loved" the restaurant but said it struggled to find consistency.

He said it had to keep closing, due to "issues with kitchen equipment”.

Visiting the restaurant in October, local food critics Matt and Cat said: "Charter Lounge fed us well, and delivered on the promises of global street food and good service."

"It is an attractive venue, easy to access in a very central location and outstanding value for money", they said.

Jake and Pete continue to run the The Sun Inn, which they took over in May 2023.

They succeeded previous landlords, Kate Goldson and David Whittaker, who retired after 17 years.
