AN ISLE of Wight pub is set to close next week for vital foundation works, and the exciting installation of a new bar and snug area.

The Woodmans Arms, in Wootton, will close its doors on Monday, January 8, and is not expected to reopen until March.

It means the pub’s last service before the break will be on Sunday, January 7, and it will be closing early on that day so the entire bar area can be packed down ahead of the works.

The building work was made necessary due to its rotting timber base, which has gradually declined over the years.

“The pub will finally be receiving some new foundations,” said co-owner Harry Fletcher, 38.

“The whole bar and snug area is going to be ripped out, have concrete poured into it, then rebuilt.

“We haven’t got an exact finish date yet, as once we get under the floorboards, we may find some hidden problems, but we estimate it will take between six and eight weeks.

“We’re hoping to reopen at the beginning of March, and really excited to get it done.

“As well as the structural works, we will be working on a new menu and introducing new drinks products.

“We’re also going to paint the whole inside, varnish down all the tables, and introduce a tablet till system.

“We’re looking to modernise the place without losing its cottage pub feel.”

It’s been a labour of love for Harry, who took on the pub with his brother Ronnie in 2017, and sold his music studio and guitar collection to fund a new play area last year.

“Thanks to all our patrons for their support,” said Harry.

“Keep an eye on our Facebook page, and on the signs outside, for updates as we go along.”
