A waterspout was spotted off the Isle of Wight late last night (Saturday, December 30), as stormy weather, widely referred to a Storm Henk though not officially named by the Met Office, began to sweep across the region.

On Facebook, Steven Plumstead shared a video of the phenomenon, which he revealed was filmed in Seaview, just before midnight (click on the post below, to see it).

Comments on Steven's post, on the Isle of Wight Community Information page, echoed what he had seen, with Islanders writing they feared windows would blow in and roofs would be lost.

Isle of Wight weather forecaster, Jamie Russell, from the IW Met Service, urged anyone who saw it to contact The Tornado and Storm Research Organisation

Weather warnings for the Isle of Wight

Two weather warnings are in place for the Island today, meanwhile.

The IW Met Service says we can expect winds of up to 75mph in some areas, accompanied by heavy rain. The wind warning is in place until 6pm tonight (Sunday). A previous warning had raised the possibility of a tornado here, but that is no longer in place.

Meanwhile, the national Met Office has issued a warning for wind from 10am until midnight, today. The worst of the weather had been expected to end sooner.

It says: "A blustery day for much of southern England and Wales, but with strongest west-northwesterly winds reserved for parts of southwest Wales, southwest England and English Channel coasts."
