Exciting plans have been submitted for a new Isle of Wight Performing Arts, Museum and Heritage Centre to be built in Shanklin.

The proposed plans by Shanklin Theatre & Community Trust include a 106-capacity flexible auditorium with retractable seating, served by a foyer and a bar.

On the lower ground level, there will be three dance/rehearsal studios, with a gallery space for a museum and heritage centre on the first floor.

The proposed site, at the Shanklin Library on Victoria Avenue, is just 140m from Shanklin Theatre.

The Theatre and Community Trust will be working in conjunction with the Theatres Trust in London through the planning application process, who have been very supportive of the proposals.

A spokesperson for the Theatres Trust said: “This represents a significant uplift in provision for Shanklin Theatre. Having discussed this, it appears there is sufficient need and demand for additional space.

“It was stated that some of Shanklin’s performances, particularly those associated with amateur and educational groups, have relatively low rates of audience occupancy.

“A small performance space would be more conducive to their needs and be of lower cost to operate.

“It would also enable additional shows and performances that are not currently viable by small and emerging artists and producers to be accommodated.”
