A landslip-hit stretch of road between Ventnor and Shanklin is to remain closed until at least January, the Isle of Wight Council has confirmed.

Leeson Road, in Bonchurch, is to be placed under a hard closure from this evening (Friday).

The council said monitoring and further technical work will be undertaken next month, to enable an informed decision on when the road can be reopened.

It was shut, temporarily, on Sunday after a major landslide saw residents evacuated.

Currently, it is closed from The Landslip car park to its junction with Bonchurch Shute.

From Bonchurch Shute, the closure is to be moved up the road to allow residents to access premises.

At the Shanklin end, the hard closure will mean no one can access the road. Any residents who need to get to their properties will need to do so from the Bonchurch side.

The council said it does intend to reopen the road, but only when safe to do so.

A spokesperson said: "We will continue to work closely with Island Roads and other partners to monitor the situation for any further changes.

"We want to keep disruption to a minimum and make sure road closures are removed as soon as it is safe to do so."

Meanwhile, as the County Press previously reported, the Graben, at Newport Road and Ocean View Road, is set to reopen later today.

It is hoped doing so will reduce traffic disruption in the town.
