Already-delayed works on the main road between Shanklin and Ventnor have been pushed back again — this time until the New Year.

Island Roads has confirmed the closure of Church Road in Shanklin, cutting off access to Ventnor, will not go ahead on December 11, as planned.

Works were initially due to start on November 13, but since then, they have been pushed back each week.

Following setbacks from recent 'inclement weather', Island Roads said the decision has been made to postpone the works.

A spokesperson said:  "Because projects of this nature can over-run, particularly at this time of the year when the weather is often inclement, we have decided to postpone this work to avoid a possible clash with forthcoming Southern Water work on the diversion route at Clarence Road Wroxall.

"We will reschedule the work for next year and keep the public informed of the new date.

When the closure does come in to effect, it is likely to mean vehicles cannot travel between Shanklin and Ventnor without diverting up Victoria Avenue to Whiteley Bank, through Wroxall, and then into Upper Ventnor.

Island Roads will be undertaking the reconstruction of the footway and/or the carriageway, with any associated drainage and preparation works.
