An Isle of Wight barber has been found guilty of historic rape of a boy when he himself was a youth.

Joe Collins, of Atherley Road, Shanklin, was convicted by a majority verdict following a jury trial at the Isle of Wight Crown Court.

The 36-year-old denied raping a male under the age of 16, at Wootton Bridge, between September 30, 1998, and April 20, 2003.

Mr Collins would have been aged between 12 and 17 at the time of the offence.

The trial was due to start on September 6 but had to be rescheduled after the defence barrister fell ill.

It was relisted for November 13.

Yesterday (Thursday), a jury returned a majority guilty verdict.

Collins is due to be sentenced on January 10.
