THIS weekend the Isle of Wight will fall silent to mark Armistice Day on Saturday, November 11, and on Remembrance Sunday, November 12.

Across towns and villages right across the Island, there will be services held across the rest of the week and into the weekend.

For veterans and serving armed forces personnel, there are travel concessions for those heading to Remembrance events.

To mark the most poignant period of the year, there will be displays of poppies created by local people, from shop window displays to knitted postbox toppers. 

Below is all the information you need to know about where to find a service, where to see poppies and more. We will continue to update this post in the coming days...

ARRETON

On Sunday, November 12, there will be an Act of Remembrance held at the village's war memorial at 11am — attendees to gather there by 10.45am —immediately followed by a service at St George's Church conducted by the Rev Kath Abbott.

BINSTEAD

A two-minute silence will be conducted at the war memorial at the top of Binstead Hill at 11am, followed by a service.

BRADING

A Remembrance Day service will be held at St Mary's Church at 10am, immediately followed by an Act of Remembrance at the war memorial in the churchyard, which will include two-minutes' silence, the reading of the town's Roll of Honour and wreath laying.

BRIGHSTONE

A traditional Remembrance Sunday parade and service will be held in the village. 

The march, led by Medina Marching Band and the Brighstone branch of the Royal British Legion, and which will include scouts, girlguides and veterans, will start at Moortown Lane at 10.30am and head along Main Road to the war memorial, where an Act of Remembrance, including wreath laying, will take place at 11am.

A church service at St Mary the Virgin Church, led by the Rev Jackie Maw, will follow. 

CARISBROOKE

A Field of Remembrance will once again be opened to the public at Carisbrooke Castle this month to commemorate those in the uniformed services who lost their lives in service of their country.

This year, it will be on Governesses’ Lawn, adjacent to the Princess Beatrice Garden.

A short Service of Remembrance, open to members of the public, will be held tomorrow (Thursday) at 10.45am.

The Field of Remembrance Service is a non-uniform event.

Crosses can be obtained at the castle, with donations going to the Royal British Legion. Refreshments will be provided by the Women’s Institute for a small donation.

COWES

In Sunday, a parade will start at about 10.40am from Northwood Park coach park, with the procession moving along Ward Avenue to the war memorial in Northwood Park

The Remembrance service and wreath laying will commence at 10.50am, followed by a service at St Mary the Virgin Church at about 11.30am, straight after the memorial service. 

A march to The Parade, with a march past will follow, which will see the deputy mayor, Cllr Stuart Ellis, will take the salute. 

All are welcome to attend.

EAST COWES

There will be an Act of Remembrance at the war memorial, followed by a service at St James Church, on Sunday, November 12. Everyone attending the war memorial should gather by 10.50am.

The East Cowes Coop Funeral Care branch features Poppy wreaths made of handprints, created by children from Queensgate Foundation Primary.

FRESHWATER

An Act of Remembrance will be held at the war memorial at All Saints' Church at 11am on Sunday. Attendees are asked to gather there at 10.30am.

A church service will follow. Both services will be led by the Rev Leisa Potter. 

LAKE

An Act of Remembrance, with wreath laying, will be held at the war memorial at 2.30pm. The Rev John Izzard will be conducting it.

School children from the Bay CofE in Sandown and Barton Primary School, Newport, have crafted poppies and they are on display at Coop Funeral Care, in Lake. Knit Knacks Lake has also been knitting some.

Lake Funeral Home is inviting veterans and Islanders to tea and biscuits the public after the Remembrance Service at Lake War Memorial, on Sunday, November 12, as a gesture of appreciation and community support.

NEWCHURCH

A Remembrance service will be held at 10am, conducted by the Rev Kath Abbott, followed by wreath laying at the war memorial at 11am.  

NEWPORT

Christ the King College will be hosting the traditional Festival of Remembrance on Friday, November 10, starting at 7.30pm. 

The event, based on the national event held at the Royal Albert Hall, will be led by the Rev Roger Whatley, the county's Royal British Legion chaplain, with dignitaries attending including the Island's Lord Lieutenant, Susie Sheldon, and all proceeds going to the Poppy Appeal.

On Sunday, an Act of Remembrance will be held outside Newport Minster, at 10.50am.

A parade of uniformed organisations and veteran will form in Drill Hall Road at 10.15am, setting off at 10.30am, heading to St Thomas's Square.

Following wreath laying and the playing of The Lament by Dr Kieron Cooney on the pipes, the Lord Lieutenant will take the salute with a march past.

The Newport Coop Funeral Care branch is adorned with poppies created and coloured by the school children of Barton Primary School, Newport.

RYDE

On Sunday, November 12, a Remembrance Sunday service will be held at All Saints' Church. A parade will form in Station Street at 9.15am and move off at 9.30am, followed by the service at 10am.

The Act of Remembrance and wreath laying will be held at Ryde War Memorial, Ryde Town Hall, Lind Street, at 10.45am for the silence at 11am. 

All welcome. Uniform groups, veterans and community groups are encouraged to join the parade.

The Phoenix Project has joined hands with the Ryde Coop Funeral Home to create a special display.

SANDOWN

The Rev Mark Williams will be conducting the town's tradition Remembrance Sunday service at the Esplanade's war memorial. The service starts at 11am, with gatherers asked to be there no later than 10.45am.

A wreath laying ceremony will follow. Sandown and Shanklin Military Band will lead hymns.
A road closure along the seafront will be in place.  

SHANKLIN

On Sunday, November 12, a service will be held at the war memorial in the Old Village at 11am, followed by wreath laying. 

The Rev Tony Richards will conduct the service. Hymns will be led by the Shanklin Town Brass Band.  

Coop's Shanklin Funeral Home window display lists the fallen heroes of Shanklin Town. Memorial stones crafted by Coop Funeral Care staff and their families will be placed around the town.

VENTNOR

The town's Royal British Legion branch will be holding a Remembrance service for Armistice Day, at the its social club, on Saturday, from 10.45am.

On Sunday, a Service of Remembrance will be held at St Catherine's Church at 2pm, followed by wreath laying at the war memorial on Park Avenue at 3pm.  

WROXALL

An Act of Remembrance will be held at the village war memorial at 11am on Armistice Day, Saturday, November 11.

On Sunday, a Remembrance Day service will be held at St John the Evangelist Church at 10am, followed by wreath laying at the war memorial at 11am.

Both services will be conducted by the Rev Kath Abbott.   

TRAVEL FOR VETERANS

South Western Railway (SWR)

SWR, which runs Island Line, is again, as it did last year, offering free travel for forces personnel and veterans on Remembrance Sunday, for those travelling in uniform or who is able to show an appropriate form of identification.

Serving personnel and veterans travelling to the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in London on Sunday, will also be able to travel on any London-bound SWR service for free on the day before the service, returning from London on the Sunday.

Red Funnel

This Remembrance weekend, Isle of Wight ferry operator Red Funnel is offering past and present serving UK armed forces free foot passenger ferry travel to and from the Isle of Wight on 11 and 12 November, 2023.

The special offer is available for travel on both Red Funnel’s High-Speed Red Jet service and the operator’s vehicle ferry service and is exclusively for serving and veteran UK Armed Forces.
