Could Ryde and Shanklin ticket offices stay open after all?

Both the Isle of Wight's train station ticket offices were proposed to close following an announcement by South Western Railway in July.

Now, the government has stepped in to ask train operators to withdraw their proposals.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper said the government had asked train operators to halt the plans, which were put forward by train companies to cut costs.

The plans had sparked outrage from unions and disability groups, including Isle Access on the Isle of Wight.

Mr Harper has now said the plans do not meet the "high threshold of serving passengers".

Ryde Interchange's ticket office was built as part of the new £10 million works to improve the area.

Cllr Phil Jordan, cabinet member for transport, said previously, SWR assured him that there was still a need for a ticket office.
