FOUR Environment Agency (EA) flood warnings are active on the Isle of Wight this afternoon (Wednesday), as well as a number of flood alerts.

Roads have been closed and properties are at risk across the Island.

In the early hours of the morning, the EA issued two flood warnings – for Monktonmead Brook and Lukely Brook, in Ryde and Newport respectively.

It has gone on to issue two further warnings for Whitwell, Wroxall, Langbridge and Alverstone on the Eastern Yar, and for Gurnard Luck.

“Please take action to protect yourself and your property and monitor local weather and river conditions,” said a spokesperson for the EA.

“Avoid contact with, walking or driving through flood water.

“Consider activating any property flood protection products you may have.”

Flood alerts have been issued for the river Caul Bourne, River Medina, and Simeon Street Rec Ground in Ryde.

Island Roads says rainfall overwhelming watercourses and the high tide this morning presented some extremely challenging conditions, but is hoping the worst of the current flooding is now behind us.

The tides are now ebbing and the weather forecasts show little or no rainfall for the rest of the day.

“Our teams are out across the Island monitoring the safety of the network, and we are re-opening roads as soon as we are able,” said Dave Wallis, Island Roads operations and maintenance manager.

“Clearly the level of flooding means that there will be debris left on the network and our clear-up operation is already underway with sweeping and cleansing teams out and about across the network.

“If residents need to travel, we would urge them to continue to take additional care as they move around the network.”
