A TEAM representing the Isle of Wight Surf Club competed in the Surfing England Interclub Championships in Bristol at the weekend.

The event, held at The Wave, was the first time it had been held at the state-of-the-art inland facility.

The Island went into the event with some key surfers unavailable with injuries and other commitments, but the ten-strong team turned in some superb personal performances.

Over the competition's two days, all surfers saw their best two waves from each day scoring towards a team total.

On Saturday, the team surfed on the right-hand waves — notably Doug Richards demonstrating excellent 'rail' work and flair; former County Press photographer, Paul Blackley, threading a small, but perfect barrel, and Aled Chivers finding smooth, long rides.

Matt Harwood scored well using his experience and small wave skills.

One of the most exciting aspects for the club, has been the emergence of young Island surfers.
Jago Tasker was great throughout the weekend — his surfing becoming more powerful as he grows.

Boe Howell, all weekend, demonstrated why she deserves her place in the England team at the World Junior Championships in Rio next month, with some committed surfing, with some incredible turns, carves and barrel riding.

Also, Noah Geary — the Island’s most improved surfer — looking stronger every session.

On Sunday, the team gave it everything, with James Ranson decimating the lefts, Shane Geary looking very strong in his backhand, and Nigel Howell showing ageless style on the lefts.

By the close of the championships, the Island finished a respectable sixth, and came very close to earning a podium spot.
