Isle of Wight drivers will have to divert as a main road in and out of Newport closes tomorrow (Friday).

Island Roads is carrying out 'significant' carriageway improvement works on Fairlee Road.

Around 4,000 square metres of new surfacing will be laid in the section between the Roundhouse and Medina College.

Work is scheduled to start tomorrow night. This section of Fairlee Road will be closed between 7.30pm and 6.30am during the work with traffic diverted via Staplers Road.

The work is being carried out over four weekday nights to minimise disruption, Island Roads said.

The project is one of several scheduled for the autumn.

Island Roads is also undertaking a highway improvement scheme on the Middle Road, outside Calbourne Mill, and is due to undertake further road improvement on the approach to the Merrie Gardens Roundabout, Lake.

To minimise disruption, work will be done overnight on October 4.

An Island Roads spokesperson said: “Our planned highway improvement work tends to scale back in the high summer months as that is when the network is at its busiest and we need to be sensitive to the needs of the Island’s tourism industry.

“While we make every effort to minimise disruption, it is just not possible to undertake this work without causing some impact on residents and the travelling public, so we would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience these improvements will cause.”

All schemes are subject to change for various reasons including inclement weather, Island Roads said.
