An Isle of Wight woman has been named as a finalist in this year's Miss Great Britain contest.

Melissa Cooke, from Cowes, is up against 26 competitors in her category.

The 31-year-old, who has lived on the Island her entire life, said she wanted to get involved with the competition because it helps support cancer research.

She told the County Press: "My family has suffered quite a lot with cancer so being able to help with cancer research was massive.

"It's just gone from there. I've had events on the Island raising money for the different charities which we support through Miss GB."

Here's how to vote for Melissa in this year's Miss GB competition

Although Islanders can't vote for Melissa to take home the top prize directly, they can help her to win a side award which goes in her favour when the overall winner is crowned.

Votes cost $1.

There are three categories in the competition — Miss, Ms and Classic.

Melissa is the youngest to feature in the Ms Category.

The categories are there to empower women and not discriminate, Melissa said.

Although she admits it would be nice to take home the top prize, she said she already feels like a winner.

"Through the people I have met and just the strength it has given me through this entire year, my mindset is definitely a ten at the moment.

"I have got so much to look forward to and I'm just trying to run with that energy and keep positive."

"I'm living for now and I think that's what Miss GB advocates."

Miss GB supports two charities, Cancer Research UK and Alex's Wish.

Each person who enters Miss GB, holds their own fundraisers, with proceeds going to the two charities.

Melissa has held her own Island fundraisers, one of which included a sea swim.

Her next fundraiser will be held at a pilates studio in East Cowes.

The final is held at the Athena venue in Leicester on October 20. There will be eight judges who decide the overall winner.
