Isle of Wight women are being urged to give rugby a 'try' as the Wight Wolves unveil this season's new kit.

Powersure Connections and Triangle Cables, both based Ryde, are injecting new energy into the local team, backing them with brand new sports kit.

And as they take to the field, new players are welcome and all you need is a pair of trainers. Girls and women aged over 14 can take part, with options for touch rugby, contact rugby, or both.

Wight Wolves captain, Claire Mumford, also known as Chunky Wolf, said their new kit had helped give the team a sense of identity.

"Looking sharp, with investment, boosts our rugby progress," she said.

Last season, the Wight Wolves entered the Hampshire Ladies Touch Rugby League.

Despite sometimes playing without subs and, on one occasion with only five players instead of seven, they finished the league in an impressive third place.

Juggling family-life and work is tricky, but for team members it is time for themselves and away from everything else, they said.

"Rugby is very much a whole team effort. I love the camaraderie.

"It makes me proud to be part of the Island's only female rugby team," said Nell 'Cranky Beans.'

This season, they will compete in the 11-teams strong Hampshire Ladies Touch League as well as move into contact and sevens rugby.

Their first tournament is away at Andover, on September 24.

Members spent the off-season training, playing touch rugby and taking on beach rugby. They also got a chance to travel to Twickenham, to watch the Red Roses in the final match of the Six Nations, when they beat France to win the championship

They were also awarded a set of training balls by the RFU, for their commitment to continuing training and team engagement, as part of the #playtogetherstaytogether campaign.

The Wight Wolves train at Wootton Recreation Ground on Wednesdays, with the clubhouse open from 5.30pm and training from 6pm.

Wight Wolves said: "No experience or knowledge of rugby is necessary, however the ability to enjoy having a go is a must!"
