An Isle of Wight man who was caught speeding while under the influence of drugs, despite holding an interim disqualification, will be sentenced next month.

Aaron Horner, 41, of Cliff Road, Cowes, previously pleaded guilty to drug driving and attended the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Friday, September 8.

On April 20, a police officer on a motorbike caught the driver of a red Suzuki travelling at 41mph in a 30 zone on a laser handheld speed camera, on the A3054 through Shalfleet, Lauren Stone, prosecuting, said

Ms Stone told the court Horner was at the wheel when the officer pulled the vehicle over, noting a strong smell of cannabis coming from the car.

Horner, who was already subject to an interim driving disqualification at the time of the offence, provided a positive roadside drug test, and a blood test at the police station found 5.1ug/l of cannabis in his blood, exceeding the limit.

Prosecution said Horner had received three points on his licence five weeks earlier, after being caught speeding.

Michael McGoldrick, defending, said his client suffers from PTSD and had told the officer he uses cannabis to help calm himself.

Magistrates ordered a pre-sentence report ahead of Horner’s sentencing on October 6.
