AN ISLE of Wight man who locked himself in his mother's annexe after damaging her Citroen car, exposed himself to police officers in drunken defiance when they came to investigate.

Jeffery Bedford, of Main Road, Brighstone, admitted — at an earlier hearing — exposing his genitals and causing criminal damage, on July 30.

At 10pm, his mother, Brenda Bedford, was at home when she heard him shouting abuse outside.

Bedford lives in her annexe near her property.

She found him on the annexe floor and asked him what he was doing.

Bedford responded with abuse. Realising he was drunk, she returned home and locked her doors, due to a history of him acting that way when drunk.

Mrs Bedford then heard him shout verbal abuse and banging on her car, said Lauren Stone, prosecuting, at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.

Bedford opened the patio doors and tried to get in — actions which frightened his mother.

A short time later, police arrived and they discovered a broken-off wing mirror, a dent in a door, with footprints on it where it had been kicked, and a smashed window.

Bedford refused to open his door to police officers and made masturbation gestures, before exposing his penis — waving it around, saying "Do you want some of this?"

A crowbar was used to gain entry to arrest him.

Bedford — with seven convictions for 12 offences, six against property — showed remorse while in custody.

He was jailed in 2020 for various offences, including criminal damage.

For Bedford, Barry Arnett said his client repaid his mother £1,176 for the damage.

Mrs Bedford said she wanted him to return to the annexe, believing he had "seen the light".

Mr Arnett said Bedford was a "classic binge drinker" and accepted drink triggered his offending over several years.

Magistrates made Bedford subject to a 12-month probation order, to include an alcohol abstinence tag, with £85 costs and a £114 surcharge and an order to sign on the Sex Offenders' Register.
