"Our lives have completely changed but she still tries to keep a smile on her face", says the mother of a 13-year-old Isle of Wight girl who is battling leukaemia.

Two fundraisers are being held to support Chelsea Wyatt-Kelly, from Binstead, and her family — and Islanders are being urged to get behind them.

It was in June, not long after the teenager had celebrated her 13th birthday, when her mother, Siobhan Paterson, said the family's world 'was turned upside down'.

Siobhan said she noticed her daughter had become increasingly tired, had lost her appetite, and had fainting episodes and bruising.

The family are used to the fatigue, she said, as Chelsea has Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), which also affects her mobililty.

However, blood tests soon revealed she had leukaemia.

After nearly five weeks at hospital in Southampton, Chelsea returned home and treatment is currently shared between the mainland and St Mary's Hospital.

But it is taking its toll.

Siobhan told the County Press: "The treatment has seriously impacted the CMT, affecting her mobililty and muscles.

"Her bedroom is now in our living room as she can no longer manage stairs.

"She can now only walk a little way aided and we rely on a wheelchair for outings."

Siobhan said Chelsea is kind, caring and loves her friends and little brother, Christopher.

With Siobhan and husband, Joe Paterson, unable to work since the diagnosis, the landlords of The Binstead Arms (formerly The Fleming) kindly came up with the idea of holding a fundraiser.

Joe is also planning a skydive for charity, Young Lives vs Cancer, which has provided the family with accommodation in Southampton.

So far, more than £1,500 has been raised but donations are still welcome.

"We still have a long road ahead of us and we can only take one day at a time", Siobhan said.
