An Isle of Wight man, who was found following a Facebook police appeal, has been sentenced after he assaulted an older man while on a night out in Newport.

Dylan Tuckey, 23, of Hinton Road, Newport, pleaded guilty to assault by beating at the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 22.

Lauren Stone, prosecuting, said the victim left The Wheatsheaf pub in Newport at 12.10am on March 23 and walked up Pyle Street towards St James' Square playing on his phone.

Ms Stone told the court he saw two men near Kenny's (formerly Bitesize), who called out to him demanding his phone.

The victim walked in the other direction but was followed across the street, where he was punched in the mouth before threats to stab him were made and another punch thrown, Ms Stone said.

A police appeal on Facebook, shared by the County Press, was successful in identifying Tuckey as the man throwing the punches.

Oscar Vincent, defending, told the court Tuckey was out with his friend walking past The Wheatsheaf when, unprovoked, the victim shouted abuse at them.

Tuckey claims he walked up to the older man and landed a single punch, causing a cut on the victim’s lip, before leaving the scene, said Mr Vincent.

Magistrates handed Tuckey a 12-month community order to include 80 hours of unpaid work and ordered him to pay £100 compensation to the victim, as well as a £114 surcharge and £85 in costs.
