A man from Chale Green was caught drug-driving on his way towards the West Wight.

Ocean Hawkesley-Smith, of Spanners Close, admitted drug driving, near Newport, on April 19.

Police stopped a seven-seater Vauxhall Zafira on the Yarmouth Road, near Newport, heading towards Shalfleet, at 9.19am.

The holiday park assistant, with no previous convictions, was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The 28-year-old failed a roadside drugs swab for cannabis and was subsequently arrested, said Munayah Hassan, prosecuting, at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.

At Newport Police Station, Hawkesley-Smith provided a blood reading of 2.6ug/L of the cannabis metabolite Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The legal limit is 2.0.

For Hawkesley-Smith, a dad of four, Jim Osborne said "he deeply regretted what he did and knows he has compromised his family's finances by driving with cannabis in his system."

Magistrates banned Hawkesley-Smith from driving for 12 months. He was also handed a £240 fine, with £85 costs and a £96 surcharge.
