A TEENAGE drug-driver caught by police jumping a red light on a Beryl e-scooter was told by an Isle of Wight magistrate he would have given him a telling off, but was sure the one from his mother was worse.

Louis Briscoe, of Salters Road, Ryde, admitted drug-driving a Beryl e-scooter on West Street, Ryde, on March 28.

He was aged 17 at the time of the offence and is now 18.

At around 11pm, police on patrol in Argyll Street saw two Beryl e-scooters speed through a red light at the junction with West Street.

Both riders were stopped and drug swabbed for cannabis, with Briscoe over the limit, said Lauren Stone, prosecuting, at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.

At Newport Police Station, Briscoe, with no previous convictions, provided a blood reading of 4.1ug/L of a cannabis derivative. The legal limit is 2ug/L.

For Briscoe, Amy Hosell said her client, set to go to university, admitted smoking cannabis and rode the e-scooter quickly to get away because someone started shouting at him.

Briscoe was banned from driving for 12 months, and fined £61, with £85 costs and a £24 surcharge.

Presiding magistrate Keith Jones told Briscoe; "I'd give you a good telling off, but I'm sure it's nothing compared to what your mum did."
