Former paratrooper Russ Chittenden, 40, walked the Isle of Wight coastline this week, as part of his epic trek around the entire perimeter of Britain.

He started in Porthcurno, Cornwall on July 1 and arrived in Cowes on Sunday, July 30.

He set off anti-clockwise, finishing in East Cowes on Wednesday, August 2, before crossing back to Southampton and continuing his way along the south coast.

Russ is raising awareness and funds for SSAFA, which is the oldest armed forces charity to help serving and former servicemen and women and their families.

Russ said: "I served two tours in Afghanistan and it took me almost 10 years to recover.

"When I left the army I worked as a bricklayer, but I found life extremely tough. Many of my family and friends drifted away.

"Earlier this year I made the decision to pack up my house, pack my rucksack and set off on this journey.

"I want people to know that, even ten years later, some servicemen and women still need support in adjusting to civvy street.

"SSAFA and other military charities provide that support and I’m hoping to raise at least £50,000 during my walk."

Russ camped at Thorness Bay on his first night and was offered firewood by
an Islander living locally.

He has allowed four years for the walk, although he hopes to complete it much more
quickly.
