SHANKLIN Regatta returns today (Thursday), and it promises to be a special one this year, as organisers gear up to celebrate its 170th anniversary.

The event takes place at Shanklin Esplanade – on the pier apron which was formerly the entrance to Shanklin Pier, and on the beaches below.

Regatta chair, Lyn Fleming, said: “We can’t wait to welcome Islanders and visitors back to Shanklin Regatta, as this is a big year for the committee and helpers.

“We have been working really hard and increased the scale for this year’s event – hiring land around the pier apron and adding more stalls.”

The event kickstarts at 10am with a packed-out programme of new and traditional regatta offerings.

This includes a lifeguard display, artist competition, magic show, tug of war, and various races, to highlight a few.

“We have also added a bar, BBQ, pizza van, and a vintage funfair,” said Lyn.

“Another addition is a dancing in the street pre-firework party, featuring Keytar Man Simon Ledger and Soundwaves Entertainment.

“Due to very high water this year, we are having to put back our famous firework display to the later time of 10.30pm.

“We know this is late for our younger families, but we do hope you can come along and enjoy all the celebrations, fun and laughter, and help with any donations.”
