A Cowes business owner is wishing a well in the town centre gets fixed, well, soon.

There is confusion over who exactly owns the well on Shooters Hill, outside Mojacs restaurant.

A lack of repairs has led to frustration among businesses as Cowes Week, one of the busiest times of the year, gets underway.

First, seating which surrounds the well fell into disrepair. Then, glass which sits on top of it cracked, allegedly from vandalism.

It has now been deemed 'unsafe'.

Roland White, who owns Willy's Guitar Shop, near to the well, told the County Press, it has become an 'eyesore'.

He said: "Cowes is a busy place, right from Easter onwards. And now we've got Cowes Week. It's not doing the image of the town any good, is it?"

Island Roads said it has fixed the bench, but the well itself is not its responsibility.

The firm said it has put fencing around it as it has a duty to ensure pedestrians are kept safe.

Questions remain over who owns it and who will pay for it to be fixed.

A spokesperson for Island Roads said: "We understand that Cowes Town Council and others are considering undertaking work to make the well safe again and as soon as this is done, we will be able to remove the safety barriers.

"Naturally we are very happy to provide advice to those seeking to repair the wishing well if required."

Mr White is just hoping a solution is found and said he is not the only business who has voiced concerns.

"No one is claiming ownership", he said.

"Privately we had a quote for the glass which comes to about £5,500 or £6,000.

"We're just hoping the council, whether it is Cowes Town Council or the Isle of Wight Council, puts its foot down and takes charge of it."

The County Press has contacted Cowes mayor and councillor for Cowes South and Northwood, Cllr John Nicholson, for a comment.
