Islanders are bracing themselves for winds of up to 55mph as a weather warning comes into force later this morning (Saturday).

The Isle of Wight Met Service alert has already to the cancellation of a number of events this weekend.

Newport Carnival is the latest to confirm it will not go ahead.

Popular children's event Festival of Heroes has also been called off, as has the annual Pier2Pier swim.

The forecaster has issued a warning for strongs winds, with a chance of rain later this evening.

The IW Met Service said: "The wind strength will be a fair amount lower than the 79mph experienced last weekend at the Needles, but we are still expecting some significantly windy conditions at times, widely gusting to 40-45mph, although perhaps as high as 50-55mph around some of the more exposed coastal areas as well as over high ground."

The warning comes into place at 11am this morning.

It is in force until 3am tomorrow morning (Sunday).
