Another derelict building in Sandown has been boarded up after police took 'unprecedented' action in an attempt to stop anti-social behaviour.

A Community Protection Warning Notice has been on served on the owners of the property, on the corner Fitzroy Street and Station Avenue.

Police said the building has been used as 'a base for offenders to commit crime'.

'We will be sending the building owners the bill', the force said on Facebook.

A post said: "Use of our boarding services will not be ‘par for the course’ moving forwards but it does allow us to show building owners we have the ability to take this action and seek to recover the costs from them!"

The building has sat empty for more than a decade.

In 2021, the then Conservative council revealed plans to use compulsory purchase powers to force the owner to sell.

This did not happen and a few months later it was listed for auction.

Meanwhile, another derelict building, the former Ocean Hotel, has now been boarded up.

It follows engagement between the owners and police, after a Community Protection Notice was issued.

The former owners of the hotel are due before the Isle of Wight Crown Court in September.

Police said: "We have seen a significant drop in incidents at the location and continue to support our partners in planning services to bring a long term solution to this site.

"We have been working closely with our partners in Housing and diversion Services to deal with reports of street drinking and linked criminality.

"Refreshed non-drinking area signage is now in place and we have been utilising our powers to remove and destroy alcohol from offenders in these areas."
