A dolphin has died after washing up on the beach in Sandown on the Isle of Wight.

The mammal was found by lifeguards yesterday (Sunday).

It had washed up in front of the station at around 1pm.

Following the discovery, beach lifeguards cordoned off the area and called the coastguard.

It helped with recording the incident, as well as moving the dolphin to a safe place ready for collection.

Todd Miller, of Ryde Beach Lifeguards, said: "We are unsure of the reason for death, but it is suspected to be the same dolphin that was spotted near Ventnor earlier in the week which is why it had coastguard tape on it when it washed up."
