After receiving online backlash, a popular Isle of Wight attraction has defended its decision to become a cashless site ahead of the busy summer period.

Shanklin Chine announced today (Thursday, July 6) that for ‘the safety and security’ of its staff and to help speed up entry times, it will now only accept card payments.

The decision faced an angry reception on social media, with many declaring they will not be visiting again.

The historic attraction, which has drawn visitors for over 200 years, said it was a difficult decision to make, but there are reasons behind it – including the safety of its staff.

Posting on Facebook, the Shanklin Chine Team said: “When working in the ticket booths, team members can often be working alone, and they have become a target for theft.”

The owners explained they are 'slowly being forced' into this decision, not only due to the declining number of banks and post offices but also the rising cost of insurance to keep the cash on site.

The Shanklin Chine Team continued: “We are sorry this has caused such upset amongst the residents and visitors to the Isle of Wight, but it is a decision we have had to make, but not make lightly.”

American Express will not be accepted, Shanklin Chine confirmed.
