An Isle of Wight man who crashed his car after watching West Ham play in a European Cup final with a few drinks at the pub has been disqualified from driving.

David Reginald Tremaine, of Newport Road, Godshill, pleaded guilty to drink driving at the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, June 27.

Liz Miller, prosecuting, said police were alerted at 11.25pm on June 7 to reports of a car on its side on the A3020 between Rookley and Godshill, with the driver still trapped inside.

Ms Miller told the court Tremaine was able to free himself from his red Daihatsu car before police arrived and confirmed he was the driver.

He failed a roadside breath test, showing 49mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, when the legal limit is 35.

Amy Hosell, defending, said her client had gone to the pub to watch West Ham in the Conference League Final and drank one more than he usually does, and then had a cup of tea.

On the A3020, Tremaine overcorrected the steering, and the car crashed onto its side, the defence said.

Magistrates told the 62-year-old: “You were lucky you weren’t hurt, but if there were any pedestrians or cyclists, it could have been very serious.”

Tremaine was disqualified from driving for 16 months and must pay a £80 fine, £85 costs and a £32 surcharge.
