The Yarbridge Inn, in Brading, revealed how someone had ripped a large area of floral wallpaper off the toilet wall and left it by the toilet, and opened all the sanitary products the pub provides its customers, and emptied them on the floor.

The Fox family, who have owned and run the Yarbridge Inn the past 12 years, posted pictures of the damage caused on their Facebook page on Monday, when it was discovered.

They wrote, ending it with a broken heart emoji: "This is incredibly upsetting. This is so disheartening when we, as a family, spend a lot of time and energy making our restaurant look as lovely as we can."

The owners believe it may have been a child or children that caused the damage, and they have since gone on to make the toilet as good as new again — work they should not have needed to do.

The post attracted hundreds of comments from wellwishers slamming the actions of the perpetrators.

One supporter, Dorothy Truman, posted: "This is heartbreaking. You have a beautiful place and people should appreciate it. Why in their right mind would anybody want to do this?"

Echoing her sentiments was Lesley Robertson, who posted: "We feel your pain wholeheartedly. We’d be devastated if somebody damaged our property like that.

"We know the hard work you put in all the time. There really are some disgusting people out there."

One of the family who runs the Yarbridge Inn, Becky Fox, said: "It was quite mean of someone to do that, but most people who come to our establishment are lovely, and, on the day in question, I was on duty and cannot imagine any of them doing something like that.

"That's why we are pretty convinced it may have been one or two children involved.

"Since it happened, we have decided to implement a policy of all children being supervised if they use our facilities.

"We put a lot of effort into making things as nice as we can for our customers.

"We had so many offers of help, it was humbling. Many of them offered to fix things for free, but we wanted to sort it because we didn't want it to become someone else's problem."
