The name and opening date of a new greengrocer - coming to the former home of Ryde's once popular Barrow Boys - has been revealed.

The high street shop closed in January, after it was announced the owner was retiring.

Almost six months on, the building is once again preparing to serve fresh fruit and veg.

Now renamed The Vegetable Cart, the shop is expected to be open next week under new ownership.

Mr and Mrs Dhaliwal, who own convenience store and post office, Mellish's, over the road, are taking the helm.

Mr Dhaliwal told the County Press: "We had a lot of customers come in who were dissappointed that Barrow Boys is gone and the local community definitely needs a local greengrocers."

As well as fruit and veg, he is hoping to sell local produce, including Island milk and cheese.

Barrow Boys was initially opened inside Busy Bee Garden Centre around 20 years ago by the Schaverien family.

It moved to Ryde High Street around a decade ago and later expanded to include the shop next door.

Upon retiring, the owner said: "I have decided to retire and my sons have made a decision to go in to another line of business.

"We would like to thank everyone kindly that have shopped with us over the last 10 years."

The Vegetable Cart is expected to open its doors on either Wednesday, June 21 or Thursday, June 22.
