A YEAR taken off the roads was the punishment for a disabled delivery driver from the Isle of Wight caught driving the wrong way on a one-way system in a BMW.

Following a special hearing to determine the length of his disqualification, Kristian Dixon, of Monkton Street, Ryde, was banned from driving for 12 months by Isle of Wight magistrates recently.

Dixon, of Monkton Street, Ryde, admitted drug driving on November 17 last year.

The 49-year-old spun his car around the wrong direction on the road's one-way system and reversed into traffic cones, knocking them over — a manoeuvre seen by a police patrol, said Liz Miller, prosecuting, at a previous hearing in March.

Dixon told the police he had used cannabis that morning and subsequently failed a roadside drugs test.

A blood test at Newport Police Station afterwards revealed he had a level of 5.2ug/l cannabis. The legal drug drive limit is 2.0ug/l.

He disputed spinning the car around, said his solicitor, Oscar Vincent — a point central to Dixon's Newton hearing.

Carrying injuries from a car crash 23 years ago, losing his licence would "impact immensely" on him, said Mr Vincent at Dixon's March hearing.

Dixon was also fined £120, with £85 costs and a £48 surcharge.
