A GOLF club on the Isle of Wight has gone state-of-the-art with a new facility that will allow year-round coaching, whatever the weather — and continue a family name long associated with the club.

The club recently unveiled its McClelland Golf Studio — a facility that incorporates the latest in golf simulators, that will allow members to play some of the world’s top golf courses and give the club pro, Peter Hammond, the opportunity to hold custom fitting sessions and provide year-round coaching in comfort.

The ribbon cutting ceremony was performed by Margaret McClelland — the club’s longest serving playing member, of more than 70 years, whose family has a life-long affiliation to the club, with her father, John, becoming a member in 1933.

John's wife, Hannah, also took a keen interest in the game and, between them, they ensured their children, Malcolm and Margaret, shared their passion for golf.

John took up the mantle of club captain in 1952, with Malcolm following in his father’s footsteps 20 years later.

Malcolm’s son, James, has been a member for more than 43 years, and it is hoped his children will continue to keep the McClelland name alive at the club for years to come.

Margaret was given the honour of striking the first ball in the new studio.
