Roadworks on a diversion route through Fishbourne 'cannot wait', insists Island Roads, as Isle of Wight drivers are left facing lengthy delays.

Southern Gas Networks (SGN) is carrying out urgent repairs on Elenors Grove, Fishbourne.

Following the closure of the main road through Havenstreet, and the Newnham Lane cut through, the road was earmarked as a diversion route.

However, SGN works have appeared there, along with temporary traffic lights.

It means there are long tailbacks in both directions on the main Ryde to Newport road.

It has left Islanders questioning why works are being undertaken at the same time, and on a diversion route.

When asked, Island Roads said it was necessary because of emergency repairs to a gas leak.

A spokesperson said: “Due to safety concerns the works cannot wait until the Havenstreet works are complete.

“In an effort to minimise traffic disruption, we have requested that the temporary signals are manually controlled by SGN while repairs are undertaken.”

"Public utility companies have legal powers to undertake such work, whether planned or emergency repairs.

"Island Roads’ role – working on behalf of the Isle of Wight Council - is to liaise with utility companies to minimise the disruption such work has on residents, businesses, and road users."

Havenstreet Main Road was closed on May 9, due to WightFibre works.

While Newnham Lane has been shut by Island Roads.
