E-scooters are to be banned on all Island Line trains and stations from next month (June), over fire fears.

South Western Railway (SWR), which operates the Isle of Wight train network, said it has concerns over the lithium-ion batteries overheating.

The ban will also cover e-unicycles, e-skateboards and hoverboards, but not electric wheelchairs and e-bikes.

It follows a similar move from other train operators across the UK.

SWR said while the chances of a fire are small, there have been recent incidents of e-scooters catching fire on other forms of public transport.

Jane Lupson, SWR’s Head of Safety, said: “We understand that these devices are popular, but the safety of our customers and staff is our number one priority, so until greater regulation and testing can be brought in to ensure the safety of those travelling on trains, e-scooters will remain banned.”

Beryl e-scooters, and e-bikes, currently operate on the Isle of Wight.

In addition to the ban, SWR has confirmed that customers will not be permitted to charge e-scooters at their stations or on their trains.

They will also not be accepted as lost property.

Mobility scooters for those with accessibility needs are exempt from the ban.
