A bid to change the way decisions are made at the Isle of Wight Council has been delayed, because it has financial implications.

At a meeting earlier this week, Cllr Geoff Brodie called for a return to a different governance system.

Cllr Brodie wants to switch back to politically-balanced group-making committees, arguing it is a system that ran well for decades.

The motion will now be considered by leading cabinet members as it would require more staff time and resources — costs which were not budgeted for.

Like most local authorities, the Isle of Wight Council uses the leader and cabinet model. It has been this way since 2000.

Cllr Brodie said he sees no need for that set-up on a council with so few members.

He argued the current arrangement favours councils with a majority political party or group and leaves other members out - creating unnecessary conflict and acrimony.

Cllr Brodie said: "The committee system ensures all councillors partake in some form of decision making - not ten or fewer cabinet members."

He hopes the motion will come back to full council in July, adding he is, "determined to push this as much as I can, as democracy needs to prevail."
