Rookley Village Association has been forced to cancel its Gardening Galore event, after heavy rain left its field waterlogged and 'little more than a marsh.'

Billed as the Isle of Wight's oldest event for all things gardening, it was due to take place at Rookley Village Hall and Sports Field, on Highwood Lane, on May 14.

Sonya Rigaud-Barrett said: "With the current challenges nurseries and growers are facing, and the need for funds to cover our own hugely increased running costs, we were really hoping this event could take place.

"However the field is so wet...it would be irresponsible to go ahead.

"We are in consultation about the possibility of a late summer or autumn event, and whether the timing should be changed for 2024."

The event, which also aimed to collect cash for Ability Dogs 4 Young People, had already been pushed back once, due to the weather.
